This is a Full time (9 month) tenure-track Bi-partite or Tri-partite position. The primary duty of this position is full-time teaching in the two-year Associate of Applied Science and in the ABET accredited four-year Bachelor of Science degrees in Geomatics. Courses may include, but are not limited to, undergraduate Geomatics courses, including the fundamentals of surveying and advanced techniques, including GPS, GIS and LIS, geodesy, mapping and map projections, photogrammetry, remote sensing, boundary law and surveying, adjustment theory and practice, hydrographic surveying, land development design, AutoCAD products, graphics, and professional development. Other duties include, but are not limited to: community service (including university, community and professional); continuing the ABET accreditation process and other assessment activities; advising students; developing outreach programs to the larger community; assisting with curriculum development and with program and faculty growth and development; writing and managing grants; participation on committees within the Department of Geomatics, the School of Engineering and the University; working cooperatively with faculty and staff in the Department and the School of Engineering. The successful candidate may also be asked to undertake chairing the Department of Geomatics at some future date (on a rotational basis) while teaching within the Department. Responsibilities as Chair include, but are not limited to: budgetary planning and control; personnel selection; ABET accreditation; curriculum oversight and planning; representing the Department and its concerns externally.

Job Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold an undergraduate degree in Surveying, Geomatics or a closely related area, as well as a M.S. or PhD (ABD acceptable with degree conferred within first semester of employment) or equivalent in Geomatics, Surveying, or a closely related area. They must have demonstrated successful teaching experience in Geomatics, as well as excellent demonstrated English language oral and written communications skills. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively and congenially with faculty, staff, students and members of the wider community from diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Final candidates will be required to present a brief on-campus lecture on a selected Geomatics topic.

Other Information

Preference will be given to candidates who show evidence of:

  1. Successful recent professional experience in Geomatics;
  2. Professional licensure or certification with the ability to achieve registration as a Professional Land Surveyor in Alaska;
  3. Recent successful teaching experience in Geomatics (can include Teaching Assistant experience), or higher education teaching certification;
  4. Demonstrated success in publishing in professional and technical journals, managing research teams (including undergraduate students), and the ability to obtain research grants;
  5. Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development;
  6. Demonstrated commitment to educational advancement for geomatics-related fields, shown through involvement in professional geomatics organizations;
  7. Field experience surveying in the US PLSS in Alaska or elsewhere;
  8. Knowledge of Alaska's physical and cultural issues, as well as its unique patchwork of land resources, issues, law, jurisdictions, statutes and policies;
  9. A background in and/or understanding of ABET accreditation; and
  10. Outreach to K-12 students and teachers and demonstrated service to the community.
