Job Description
Background on AIMS
AIMS sits at the forefront of attempts to develop and harmonize disparate approaches to information management. AIMS has a mandate to firstly build “Information Management Capacity” in the government of Afghanistan, and secondly to provide “Information Management Services” to the government and the broader humanitarian community. AIMS promotes common data and technology standards and the free flow of information. It achieves this through focused customer service, product provision, capacity building and supporting information policy development. Currently AIMS is serving over 10 government departments.

Customer Services provided include:
· Product Services; the provision of data and map products over internet, in soft and hard copy.
· Training Services: a suite of specialist and general training in GIS and database courses following international certification standards.
· Advisory Services; information standards, data collection, database design, data management,
· Government Services; building skills and systems in cooperation with development organisations.
Technical Services provided include:
· GIS Services; digital mapping, project support, systems set up, distribution of technical files.
· Database and MIS Services; supporting standards development for ministries, developing shareable systems for development organisations.
Job Description
Sponsored by the U.S. Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) on behalf of the Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI), the Intern shall work with AIMS staff in relation to capacity building in Afghanistan Geodesy and Cartography Head Office (AGCHO) on GIS and Remote Sensing, under the overall management of the Government Services Coordinator. This support will include but not be limited to:
· Establish a GIS lab in the Cadastral Department of AGCHO.
· Developing appropriate training materials and content for use in teaching
· Provide GIS training to staff in Cadastral Department.
· Develop an inventory of existing maps in Cadastral Department.
· Conduct an introductory Remote Sensing training for Remote Sensing institute of AGCHO..
· Develop content for AGCHO’s web site.
· Advising the Training team on new methods and techniques in class teaching.
· Prepare progress reports.
· Any other duties as directed by Government Services Coordinator.
Qualifications
· University Degree or similar qualification.
· Practical working knowledge of GIS and Remote Sensing.
· Understanding of MIS, and database development.
· Experience in developing/conducting training courses and building the capacity of professional staff.
· Experience leading teams in a complex and sensitive multi-cultural environment.
· Fluent spoken and written English essential, knowledge of Dari/Pashto/Farsi desirable.
· Excellent inter-personal and general communication skills.
· Experience working in Afghanistan or similar overseas situations a significant advantage.

Volunteer - with travel allowance and daily living stipend.
