Job Description


Background: The Tsleil-Waututh (TWN) is a progressive Coast Salish community based in North Vancouver, British Columbia. TWN traditional territory encompasses 720 square miles that includes areas as diverse as downtown Vancouver, Burrard Inlet, Indian Arm and the Indian River valley. The TWN has gained a reputation for creative visioning and active management in all areas of its jurisdiction. The TWN Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Mapping department has been in operation for close to ten years. During this time the GIS department has supported several TWN initiatives including traditional use studies, bioregional mapping, forest management planning and treaty related measures. The TWN GIS department requires the services of a dynamic and committed individual who is able to provide the technical and personal skills required to participate in this leading edge organization.

Position Summary: To join a dynamic team of resource professionals and provide high quality GIS services and technical support to the TWN Treaty, Lands and Resources Department. The TWN GIS Specialist will work in a manner that supports the timely research, construction, revision and use of digital cartographic resources for purposes including planning, natural resources management, treaty negotiation and other related activities.

Specific Responsibilities: · Participate with the TWN Treaty, Lands and Resources Department staff and consultants in the research, design, production and demonstration of digital map products for bioregional plans, watershed plans, community development plans, traditional use mapping, natural resource inventory and management mapping. · Create, maintain and organize spatial and attribute data utilized in GIS applications. · Work collaboratively and provide leadership on all TWN mapping projects.

Job Qualifications


Technical Skills: · Extensive knowledge of a variety of vendor specific GIS software programs particularly ESRI Software (ArcGIS, ArcIMS, ArcSDE). · Knowledge of databases and database software: Oracle8/9, PL/SQL, SQL, Access. · Knowledge of geostatistics and spatial theory is an asset. · Knowledge and skills involving remote sensing and satellite imagery manipulation is an asset · Should be able to use GIS software with multiple programming languages: C, C++, Visual Basic, Python XML, Java, Java Script to integrate databases, store and manipulate tabular data, generate maps, metadata, and troubleshoot networked systems.

Personal Skills: · Experience working in a First Nations community is a very strong asset. · An understanding of First Nations issues in BC is preferred, especially resource access, social justice, and recent legal developments · Excellent interpersonal and team participating skills is essential.

Education and Qualifications: · Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Geography, Natural Science, Management Information Systems or a related field or concentration. · Technical College Certificate in Geographic Information Systems. · Masters Degree is an asset.
