Job Description
Ecotrust Canada is a private, non-profit organization working to build a conservation economy in the coastal temperate rain forest region of British Columbia. A conservation economy sustains itself on “principled income” earned from activities and practices that restore rather than deplete natural capital. Through our Information Services and Economic Development programs we offer tools and resources to coastal communities to facilitate positive change at the intersection of ecosystem conservation, economic opportunity, and community vitality. Under the supervision of the Information Services Manager, the GIS Analyst supports bioregional, sector-based (fisheries, forestry, climate) and community-based projects by providing database management, GIS project methodology design, spatial and statistical analysis, cartography and training. The position requires skills in spatial analysis, database design, an aptitude for programming, and experience with First Nations community capacity building. Some travel to coastal communities is required. We are interested in individuals who are energized by working directly with community partners. Major Responsibilities:
- Undertake terrestrial and marine spatial analysis for natural resource assessments, ecosystem and socio-economic modeling.
- Assist in developing & delivering GIS training modules, and provide technical assistance in support of First Nations community needs.
- Support development of spatial/temporal measures that help to describe a conservation economy.
- Develop and maintain customized decision support tools.
- Assist with project development and management.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Demonstrated experience applying GIS within scientific procedures and protocols, especially pertaining to fisheries, forestry and other natural resource based research in British Columbia.
- Ability to meet deadlines and juggle multiple priorities in a dynamic fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Commitment to the Ecotrust Canada mission of building a conservation economy.
Job Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Minimum Bachelors degree (Masters of Science degree preferred) in geography, natural resources management or similar field.
- Minimum 4 years professional work experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, especially ArcInfo, ArcGIS 9.X, Spatial Analyst.
- Demonstrated analytical experience using qualitative and quantitative data.
- Experience working with remotely sensed imagery is an asset.
- Proficiency in relational databases (MS Access, SQL Server) and exposure to object oriented languages (Visual Basic, Python, Pearl) is a strong asset.
- Experience in writing funding proposals is an asset.
