Job Description
Support coordination of and consultation on research involving spatial analysis, geographic data, and related programs and projects. GIServices is a newly established unit that reports directly to the Vice-President Research through the Academic and Scientific Director. The focus of GIServices is the support and guidance of research involving geographic data and spatially explicit analysis. GIServices is recruiting a dynamic and informed advocate for the integration of spatial thinking into the research activities at the University of Saskatchewan.
Job Qualifications
Education: The minimum requirement for this position is a Master’s degree (M.A. or M.Sc) in geography, geomatics, or related discipline with explicit training and experience with geographic data, spatial analysis, and related technologies. Past experience and training should include Geographical Information Systems (GIS), cartography, modelling, and/or remote sensing, with familiarity will each.
Experience: Training and experience involving spatial thinking and its application to the development and success of discrete research projects and large research programs is essential. Experience applying the tools of spatial analysis and the development of original research is considered central to the success of GIServices. Experience developing research involving spatial thinking is an asset, as is experience working on or with research teams and interdisciplinary groups.
Skills: The coordinator will have experience with software related to: GIS (particularly ArcGIS, but MapGuide, Manifold, GRASS, etc. would be an asset); GPS data manipulation; remote sensing (e.g. ENVI); statistical analysis (SPSS, STATA, SAS, R); and other spatial analysis techniques and tools. It would be an advantage to have experience with digital image processing software. The coordinator will require verbal, written, and graphical communications skills at a level commensurate with research publications and presentations. The coordinator will require interpersonal skills to engage others in GIS, including teaching concepts and practices and promoting the use of GIS in research.
Other Information
The Analyst and Coordinator will be involved in all aspects of the research process in order to support ongoing and proposed research programs and projects by university faculty, units, and off-campus entities. It is anticipated that GIServices will engage researchers across campus in the development and conduct of research involving geographic data and spatial analysis. Coordination of research related activities associated with both teaching and data availability fall under the GIServices umbrella and will require the Coordinator’s active involvement. In association with the Library’s GIS/Data Services Librarian and the Academic and Scientific Director, the GIS Analyst and Coordinator will assist in the development of policies and practices for data access, teaching and training, and research support in order to ensure successful engagement with the University research community (including faculty, research assistants, graduate students, etc.). The research coordinator will report to the Academic and Scientific Director of GIServices. In order to best serve the GIS user community the Coordinator will also require administrative and project management skills
